6 Tips for preparing for a hurricane

Preparing for a hurricane is crucial to ensure safety and minimize damage. Here are essential steps to help you get ready before a storm hits.

1.     Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates via local news, weather apps, or the National Hurricane Center. Stay aware of the storm's path and potential strength.

2.     Emergency Kit: Prepare a disaster supply kit with essentials like bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, first aid supplies, important documents, and cash. You should have enough supplies to last at least three days.

3.     Create an Evacuation Plan: Know your local evacuation routes and shelters. Plan where you'll go if ordered to evacuate. Ensure your family members know the plan, and don't forget to account for pets.

4.     Secure Your Home: Board up windows or install storm shutters to protect against high winds. Bring in outdoor furniture, grills, and other objects that can be carried away by the wind. Check for loose branches or trees around your property that could pose a risk.

5.     Backup Power: Consider a generator to maintain power during outages, especially for critical appliances like refrigerators or medical equipment.

6.     Insurance: Review your homeowner’s insurance to ensure it covers hurricane damage. Flood insurance is often separate and essential for areas prone to storm surges.
